On 17 July 2023, the Supreme Court of India refused to entertain a plea seeking to take action against Anubhav Singh Bassi (a stand-up comedian and actor). The plea claimed that the comedian allegedly portrayed the judiciary in a negative manner as well as humiliated the judicial system in his recent show ‘Bas Kar Bassi’ on the online streaming platform Amazon Prime. The matter was presented before the Supreme Court bench including Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice SK Kaul. While rejecting the plea, the bench said “Do you not have something better to do; and you are practicing for 20 years you say? Dismissed. Not a matter for Article 32.”
The Supreme Court also said that “Why should we entertain this against some stand-up comedy show? Come with something better.” During the Court proceedings, the Counsel argued that “In Bas Kar Bassi he has defamed the judiciary, legal profession and lawyers.” To which, the SC bench replied that “Let other lawyers take care of themselves. You don’t have to defend the entire community. You take care of yourself.” Thus, the bench dismissed the plea against Anubhav Singh Bassi.
