Lok Sabha Secretariat issues notice ensuring Rahul Gandhi’s reinstatement as the Lok Sabha Member

Today, the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Utpal Kumar Singh, issued a notification restoring the parliamentary membership of Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi. The same was done in view of the August 04 decision of the Supreme Court suspending Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark at an election rally in 2019. The decision paved the way for Rahul Gandhi’s reinstatement as the Lok Sabha Member from Wayanad in Kerala. Under the criminal defamation case, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment, resulting in his disqualification as a member of the parliament. 

As per the decision of the Supreme Court, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a notification that revoked his disqualification as a Lok Sabha member. In this context, the Congress wants the participation of Rahul Gandhi in the no-confidence motion discussion that is to be initiated tomorrow (August 08, 2023) in the Lok Sabha. As soon as the news came, Celebrations broke outside Congress stalwart Sonia Gandhi’s residence and in the party headquarters. 

While staying the conviction of Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi, the Supreme Court bench including Justice BR Gavai, Justice Sanjay Kumar, and Justice PS Narasimha stated that “No doubt that the utterances by the petitioner were not in good taste. The petitioner ought to have been more careful in making a sentence.” It also observed that “The ramifications of disqualification not just affect the right of the individual but also the electorate.”
