Expressing concern over lawyers targeting judges and seeking recusal by making baseless allegations, the SC on Monday said advocates mustn't consider themselves above the law and must face consequences for causing obstruction of justice.

A vacation bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Bela M Trivedi said it's become a brand new “fashion” for lawyers to focus on judges particularly in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh and therefore the more bold a judge, the more the allegations.

The court passed the observation while upholding the conviction and 15-day jail term of a 71-year old lawyer for contempt of court. The lawyer was held guilty of contempt of court by Madras HC and barred from practicing in any court for a year.

He had obstructed the execution of a non-bailable warrant issued by the HC against him. He, together with other lawyers, had attacked the police personnel who had gone to execute the order.
