Today (November 04, 2024), the Supreme Court (SC) bench of Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Sandeep Mehta was hearing an application filed by Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan seeking relaxation of the bail condition to mark his presence at a police station in Uttar Pradesh (UP) every Monday. The SC bench relaxed the bail condition and said, “Order dated 9th September 2022 is modified and it shall not be necessary for the petitioner to report to the local police station. The other prayers made in the present application can be independently agitated.” In September 2022, the SC of India imposed the bail condition while granting bail to Siddique Kappan after nearly 2 years of incarceration in the Hathras conspiracy case, “The appellant shall record his presence in local police station every Monday. This condition shall apply for first 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, the appellant shall be at liberty to go to Kerala but shall report to the local police station in similar fashion, that is every Monday, and mark his presence in the register kept on that behalf.” During the proceedings, Senior Additional Advocate General Sharan Dev Singh Thakur with Advocate Ruchira Goel, Advocate Sharanya Sinha, and Advocate Harshita Nigam appeared for the State of Uttar Pradesh. In contrast, Advocate Azhar Asees and Advocate Haris Beeran represented Kappan.
