The Supreme Court today (July 29) was hearing a plea filed by a law graduate seeking directions to overturn the decision of the National Testing Agency (NTA) that canceled the UGC-NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) examinations due to an alleged paper leak. The three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra refused to entertain the plea and said, “Why are you concerned? what's your locus? somebody who's a member of the Bar files a PIL. Utilize your time in some substantive legal matters, not just something you read in the newspaper, and file a PIL. Let them (students) come here, we will deal with it." It added, “While declining to entertain the above PIL, We clarify that we have not expressed anything on merits.” On June 18, the UGC-NET exam took place and on June 19, the Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the exam due to an alleged paper leak. The matter was referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for investigation. The UGC-NET has now been rescheduled to be held in August 2024.
