Today, the Supreme Court directed ex-IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi to tender an unconditional apology over his remarks against the judiciary in his social media post. The bench observed that Lalit Modi is not above law and institution; therefore, the Supreme Court was not satisfied with counter affidavit filed by him. The bench comprising Justice CT Ravikumar and Justice MR Shah directed him to tender an apology on social media as well as on leading national newspapers. Along with this, Lalit Modi was told to file the affidavit stating that in future such posts would not be made that tantamount, even remotely, tarnishing the image of Indian judiciary before tenedring the apology.
Lalit Modi is facing investigation launched by Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the charges including rigging bidding deals, offering bribes, financial impropriety, betting, and money laundering. Lalit Modi is ex- vice president of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and is responsible for conceiving India’s popular T-20 League Series IPL which he managed for three years before he disappeared to London. He has been in soup for making remarks on social media second time this year. Earlier in the month of January, he was accused of making ‘scurrilous’ remarks on social media against the former attorney general and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi. Advocate Kapil Sibal submitted that even after receiving warnings from the top Court bench, Lalit Modi was still making such remarks. Sibal pointed that “Comments are being made while the mediation is going on. These should be taken down. This is violation of the Court orders.”
