2020 Delhi Riots: Supreme Court adjourns hearing of Umar Khalid’s bail plea

Today, the Supreme Court of India heard a plea against the Delhi High Court’s decision to deny bail to former JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) Scholar and activist Umar Khalid. Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Bela M Trivedi considered the hearing of Khalid’s plea today and adjourned the bail hearing. He was one of the accused among 59 others in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi Riots. Khalid was arrested under Section 13, Section 16, Section 17, and Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Section 25 and Section 27 of the Arms Act, 1959, and Section 3 and Section 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984. Earlier on July 12, a two-judge bench of the SC including Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice MM Sundresh heard the matter and adjourned to hear a bail plea on July 24 (today).
