Today, the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court enters into the third day of its hearing petitions related to the demand for marriage equality in India. The bench including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul will hear a bunch of 15 petitions seeking recognition of same-sex marriage. The hearing for the same started on April 18, 2023, and the topic of discussion was “No absolute concept of Man, Woman”, further on the 2nd day of the hearing (April 19, 2023) the Constitution bench gave their views on “urban and elitist” concept. During the hearing, DY Chandrachud said “When you say that this is an intrinsic or innate characteristic, it is also an argument in response to the government’s contention that this is all very elitist or urban or biased in favor of a particular case…It may be more urban in its manifestation because more people from the urban areas of this country are coming out of the closet.” The hearing will continue today.
