Today, the Supreme Court of India was hearing Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Senthil Balaji’s plea seeking bail on medical grounds. He was arrested in June this year by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a cash-for-job money laundering case. A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court including Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Aniruddha Bose heard the matter today and adjourned Balaji’s bail plea until next week. During the court proceedings, the bench initially decided to defer the hearing of the matter for four weeks but the junior lawyer appearing for Balaji opposed. The junior lawyer protested, “It’s a bail matter. We are seeking bail on medical grounds. Can it be taken up on Monday?” To this, Justice Trivedi commented, “If it was such an urgent matter, the counsel should have been present.” Further, Justice Bose agreeing with Justice Trivedi said, “We’ll take it up Monday (November 06, 2023) next week.”
