Today, the Supreme Court allowed Sanjay Kumar Mishra to continue as Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till September 15, 2023, in “Nation’s interest”. While hearing the Centre’s plea seeking an extension of the ED director’s tenure till October 15, 2023, in view of the ongoing FATF (Financial Action Task Force) review, the top Court ordered to extend the tenure till 15 September. Earlier on July 11, the Supreme Court mentioned that the extension of the ED Director’s (Sanjay Kumar Mishra) tenure was illegal and violated its 2021 judgment. However, to allow for a smooth transfer, the top Court permitted Mishra to continue till July 31, 2023. The plea heard today was mentioned by the Centre stating, “At such a critical juncture, it is essential to have an individual who is well-acquainted with the overall status of money laundering investigations and proceedings across the country and also the intricacies of the procedures, operations, and activities of the investigating agency, at the helm of affairs at the Directorate of Enforcement. This is necessary to ensure that the assessment team can be promptly and ably assisted with necessary reports, information, statistics, etc.”
