On August 27, 2024 (Tuesday), the Supreme Court (SC) of India filed a cyber crime complaint with Delhi Police against a social media handle for impersonating Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and seeking money for cab fare. The complaint was registered by the CJI after he took note of the screenshot of a message that went viral on social media showing a handle with the name and display picture of CJI Chandrachud. Considering the CJI’s complaint, the Supreme Court’s security department registered a first information report (FIR) with the cyber crime department. In the post, the imposter wrote “Hello, I am CJI and we have urgent meeting of the collegium and I am stuck at Cannaught Place can you sent me 500rs for cab? I will return the money once I reach the court.” The fraudster at the end of the message added, “sent from iPad,” to make the text look more real.
