Today (September 18, 2024), the Supreme Court (SC) of India adjourned the hearing of the review petitions against the Vijay Madanlal judgment to October 03, 2024. The judgment under consideration upheld various provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The matter was mentioned before a three-judge bench of the SC constituting Justice Surya Kant, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, and Justice Dipankar Datta. Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta mentioned the review petitions pending against the Vijay Madanlal judgment before the SC, requesting more time saying that out of 9 review petitions, only 1 review petition is with the Union. He said, “There are two issues, apart from the fact that we need some time to prepare...out of 9 review petitions, only 1 is with us...we don't have the 8...we will take a copy, we are not raising issue on that...they may have served on central agency, there is some problem…” The SG’s request was opposed by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal who appeared for the petitioners and said that ‘this has been going on for too long’. On the contrary, the SG argued that today was the second date of listing. After hearing the contentions, the SC bench adjourned the matter to October 03 and told Sibal that there may be no further adjournments in the matter.
