On June 08, 2023, a lawyer’s body demanded change in the manner in which judges are elevated to the Supreme Court and High Courts. It stated that the appointment and elevation of judges for the Supreme Court and High Courts should be made solely on the basis of merit. While speaking to the media, the Chairman of the All India Bar Association, Adish C Aggarwal, stated that Court proceedings should be video-recorded. He also said that the retirement age of the judges should be raised in the top Court, High Courts, and the subordinate judiciary. Moreover, Adish C Agarwal also highlighted the issue of appointing judges to High Courts and said that he was against the selection of Chief Justices of High Courts from the High Courts of other states. He contended that “Chief Justices coming from other states maybe not in a position to make just and proper administrative decisions, as they are usually unaware of the local factors.” He added that retired judges should not be appointed to any tribunal or commissions.
