Delhi Excise Policy Scam Case: Supreme Court grants bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh

On April 02, 2024, the Supreme Court (SC) of India granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh in the money laundering case in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy scam case. The SC bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dipankar Datta, and Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale granted bail after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said that it had no objection in granting bail to Sanjay Singh. During the morning session, the SC asked Learned Additional Solicitor General Mr. SV Raju, appearing for the ED whether it had an objection in granting bail to Sanjay Singh. The ED informed that it had no objection in the case Sanjay Singh (appellant) is released on bail during the pendency of the proceedings instituted in respect of offences under Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. 

In an order delivered by the SC on April 02, the SC said, “We must record that the concession has been made on behalf of the respondent- Directorate before commencement of arguments on their side.” It added. “In view of the statement made, we allow the present appeal and direct that the appellant- Sanjay Singh (AAP Leader) will be released on bail during the pendency of the…proceedings, on terms and conditions to be fixed by the trial court.” Earlier in the day on April 02, Delhi Minister Atishi Marlena said, “The BJP feels that despite Arvind KejriwalManish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Satyendra Jain being in jail, the Aam Aadmi Party is still united and strong. Now, they are planning to put the next line of leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party in jail.” 

After hearing the matter, the SC granted bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh. In context to the AAP leader Sanjay Singh’s bail, AAP leader Raghav Chadha commented, “Today is a very emotional day for every Aam Aadmi party worker. There is happiness today with the release of our lion Sanjay Singh which cannot be expressed in words. Jai Bajrang Bali!” Also, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj commented, “This is a big day for democracy in the country and a moment of happiness and hope.”
