The UP government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it had opposed the bail plea of Ashish Mishra, son of Union minister Ajay Mishra, in reference to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that left eight people, including four farmers, dead.

Uttar Pradesh government also said that each one the witnesses also are regularly contacted by the police for appraisal of their security conditions.

The submission of the Uttar Pradesh government came in an affidavit as a reply to the petition seeking to cancel the bail of Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra Teni.

The government told the Supreme Court that it had opposed the bail plea of Ashish Mishra within the Allahabad state supreme court and also the submission of the petition that the state failed to effectively oppose the bail application of the accused Ashish Mishra is totally untrue.

Uttar Pradesh Government further said that as per the Allahabad High Court's order of February 10, 2022, the limitation period against the identical continues to be running, and also the decision to file SLP against the identical is pending consideration before the relevant authorities.

The government also said that the investigation revealed that the altercation between a witness and also the opposite party came about over the throwing of Gulal.

Earlier, it had been alleged that one witness was attacked by some miscreants. The alleged attackers threatened the witness that Mishra is out on bail and also the ruling party had also won the election and that they would see to him.

"Witnesses of the altercation say no such statements were made... Families of all victims and witnesses of Lakhimpur violence are being provided continuous security. The regime has provided armed gunners to witnesses," the govt. said.

Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli are set to listen to the petition filed by the relatives of the victims tomorrow, seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Ashish Mishra by the Allahabad judicature.

On March 16, the court had issued notice to the state government and Ashish Mishra, seeking their responses to why his bail mustn't be cancelled. The court also expressed concern on the problem of a witness being attacked.

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing on behalf of the petitioners, had told the Supreme Court that a key witness had been brutally attacked after Ashish Mishra got bail and also the attackers had issued threats that now that the BJP had won the UP elections, they'd "take care" of him.
