Today, the Supreme Court declined relief to Atiq Ahmad who was a prime accused in the murder of Umesh Pal. Umesh Pal was the main witness to the 2005 Bahujan Samaj Party Legislator’s murder. The gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad approached the Supreme Court seeking protection during his custody in the Umesh Pal murder case with Uttar Pradesh police. The top Court bench comprising Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Ajay Rastogi ordered to approach the Allahabad High Court for protection. On Monday evening, Ahmad was shifted from Sabarmati Central jail in Gujarat to Naini Central jail in Prayagraj amid heavy security.

During the hearing, the Counsel appearing for Atiq Ahmad expressed his concerns regarding an alleged imminent threat to his life and urged the Supreme Court bench to grant protection measures. The counsel added, “If this court denies the petitioner’s protection, it would mean a death warrant for him.” The bench refused the counsel’s contention and replied, “The state machinery will take care of you.” Further added, “It is not a case where this court is going to interfere. Liberty granted to move appropriate application before the High Court. Whatever is the process prescribed under law will be followed.” The petition was then withdrawn by the petitioner.

In connection with the 2007 kidnapping of Umeah Pal, the accused was today produced in Prayagraj court. In a recent update on the matter, it has been determined that Atiq Ahmad and two others have been convicted by MP/MLA Court in Prayagraj in the Umesh Pal abduction case. Under Section 364A, the convicts are sentenced to life imprisonment.
