YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia approached the Supreme Court (SC) seeking relief from the multiple FIRs lodged against him in various states for his obscene remarks made during the ‘India Got Latent’ show. He was charged with multiple sections including, Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman), Section 196 of the BNS, 2023 (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), Section 296 of the BNS, 2023 (Obscene acts and songs.), Section 299 of the BNS, 2023 (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious belief), and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form).
Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as Beer Biceps, filed a petition in the SC through his lawyer Abhinav Chandrachud seeking to club the FIRs registered against him in different states and early hearing. The matter was mentioned before the top court bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The CJI declined to hear the matter stating that he does not allow oral mentionings and clarified that the date for hearing the petition has already been assigned.
