Collegium Recommends The Appointment Of Justice K. Vinod Chandran As A Supreme Court Judge

On January 07, 2025, the Supreme Court (SC) Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice K. Vinod Chandran as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Collegium, in its meeting held on January 07, discussed the names of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of the High Courts eligible for appointment to the top court. Justice K. Vinod Chandran was appointed as a Judge of the Kerala High Court on November 08, 2011, and was elevated as the Chief of Justice of the Patna High Court on March 29, 2023, and has been functioning as the Chief Justice of that High Court since then. He served as a Judge of the High Court for more than 11 years and as a Chief Justice of a big High Court for more than a year. 

The Collegium, in its resolution, pointed out that during his long tenure as a Judge and Chief Justice of the High Court, Mr. Justice Chandran has acquired significant experience in diverse fields of law. It also noted that in the seniority of Judges hailing from the Kerala High Court, Justice Chandran is the senior most puisne judge. Moreover, while recommending Justice Chandran’s name, the SC Collegium considered the fact that there is no representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court from the High Court of Kerala. Lastly, the Collegium unanimously recommended that Mr. Justice K. Vinod Chandran be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
