Today, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court including Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul heard a plea regarding the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System Project (RRTS project). The issue was addressed due to no contribution of the Delhi Government towards the RRTS project due to budgetary constraints. Earlier on July 3, 2023, the top Court directed the Delhi Government to file an affidavit disclosing funds used by them for advertisements in the last three financial years (since 2020) within two weeks. Today, the bench came to know that the Delhi Government spent Rs. 1,100 Crore towards advertising since 2020. The bench hearing the matter pulled up the Delhi Government for the delay in RRTS Project and stated that “If 1,100 crore can be spent on ads in the last three years, certainly infrastructure projects can be financed.” Further, the SC bench directed the government to pay the overdue amount within two months. When the court proceedings were initiated today, July 24, the Senior Counsel for the Delhi government told the bench that funds will be allotted. The same was further noted by the top Court, “Senior Counsel says provisions will be made in line with the proposed schedule. We take this on record, the overdue amount will be paid within 2 months.”
