Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute: Supreme Court extends interim stay of the Allahabad HC order and posts the matter to August 2024

Today (April 15, 2024), the Supreme Court (SC) bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta extended the interim stay of the Allahabad High Court order in connection with the Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute and posted the matter to August 2024. The Allahabad HC ordered the appointment of a commission to inspect the Shahi Idgah Mosque. The management committee of the Shahi Eidgah Mosque, Mathura, and the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board filed the petition. The petitioners also challenged the May 2023 Allahabad HC order transferring to itself a batch of suits over the land dispute. While directing to relist the matter, the SC said that the interim order will continue to operate till the next date of the hearing. During the proceedings today, Advocate Tasneeem Ahmadi and Senior Advocate Shyam Divan appeared for the Mosque Committee and plaintiffs respectively.
