Today (January 08, 2024), the Supreme Court (SC) agreed to constitute a bench for hearing a plea raising concerns regarding the Collegium system for the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and Higher Judiciary. The petition was mentioned for urgent listing by one advocate before the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. While mentioning the plea, the lawyer said that former SC judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, in a recent interview with the PTI (Press Trust of India) in December 2023, highlighted ‘faults’ in the present Collegium system. In his interview, Justice Kaul highlighted internal frictions within the Collegium system. Considering this, the CJI agreed to constitute a bench for hearing the petitions regarding the same.
