On January 16, 2024 (yesterday), the Supreme Court (SC) of India relisted a plea of Congress leader Jaya Thakur on January 22, 2024, seeking immediate implementation of the Women Reservation Bill, Nari Shakti Vandan Act-2023, before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The SC bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta passed an order yesterday stating “Re-list on 22.01.2024.” Senior Advocate Vikas Singh who appeared for Jaya Thakur illustrated the urgency in the matter stating, “There is urgency in this matter. If the law is implemented, then it will be given effect during the general elections.” The Court proceedings were deferred on January 16 because no lawyer made an appearance on behalf of the respondent, the Union of India. Further, Justice Khanna said, “Look I am not saying anything…Let the other side come. We will take up the matter next Monday (January 22, 2024).”
