Today, the Supreme Court bench issued notice on Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on Gujarat High Court’s order in a criminal defamation case. The notice was issued to complainant Purnesh Modi and the State of Gujarat as well as listed the matter for hearing on August 4, 2023. During the Court proceedings today (July 21, 2023), a request for an interim suspension of the conviction was refused by the bench. The request was made by Senior Advocate AM Singhvi and Advocate Prasanna S. While refusing the request, Justice BR Gavai said, “At this stage, without hearing the other side, how can we give?” In addition to this, Senior Advocate Singhvi contended before the SC to list the matter for urgent hearing as 111 days were passed since the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament. Hearing the contentions of both parties, the SC ordered to list the matter for hearing on August 4 and sought for a response from respondents Purnesh Modi and the State of Gujarat.
