SC agrees to hear the petitions against the appointment procedure of Election Commissioners as per new law on March 15, Friday

Today, the Supreme Court (SC) of India agreed to hear the petitions against the appointment procedure of Election Commissioners as per the new Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023 on Friday (March 15, 2024). The petitions were mentioned before the SC by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the General Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, Dr. Jaya Thakur. The matter was mentioned today before a three-judge bench consisting of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice MM Sundresh, and Justice Bela M. Trivedi. The petition filed challenges the exclusion of the Chief Justice of India from a panel to select Election Commissioners. Justice Khanna informed the Advocate-on-Record Prashant Bhushan, “I just got the message from the Chief Justice, the matters are listed for Friday (March 15, 2024)”.
