Today, the Constitution bench is hearing for the eighth day a batch of petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage in India. The Constitution bench hearing the matter constitutes Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul. In the previous hearings, the Central Government has opposed the petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage and has filed an application asking the top Court to first determine the maintainability of the petitions. In this context, the Islamic religious body Jamiat-Ulama-I-Hind, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) had submitted their contentions regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples. After seven hearings on the matter, today the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court has gathered again to hear the arguments. The judgment or order is anticipated to be delivered today.
